In the research facility “envihab” (DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Cologne) where typically countermeasures against the effects of extreme environmental conditions on humans are tested and developed, the 8th ROBEX community workshop was held on 19 and 20 April 2016. In the futuristic-stylish atmosphere of „envihab“ – which seems like a “Habitat” landed on the Moon – around 65 employees of the Helmholtz Alliance ROBEX came together. They updated and discussed the work in the several workpackages and design teams as well as training and education. Two additional lectures on „simulation as a tool in the development process“ with regard to the deep sea Glider and the Moon Rover were held. At the end of the workshop the representatives of the ROBEX Advisory Board, Benoit Pirenne (Ocean Networks Canada) and Mark Wieczorek (Sorbonne, Paris) reflected their very positive impressions about the coalescence of the two worlds „deep sea“ and „space“, as well as their satisfaction expressed with the substantive progress.
Highlights at this workshop were also the guest lectures of
Professor Wimmer-Schweingruber (University of Kiel) about space radiation and the derived perspective for astronautical spaceflight,
Prof. Dachwald (FH Aachen) with his presentation of the project „Enceladus Explorer“ and the „Ice-Mole “
Marius Wirtz (DFKI Bremen) about the project“ Europe Explorer „.
The exchange with the guests led to further networking with other similar acitivies in Germany, but will also influence the future of the Helmholtz Alliance ROBEX.

Viator test 4 (02.04. – 05.04.2016)
On the ALKOR expedition 474 the MANSIO-VIATOR system was successfully tested again. Under the lead of GEOMAR and with participation of employees of the ROBEX partners AIRBUS DS, DFKI and DLR, the system was used in a field test in the south-western Baltic. Under different test series different marker systems, odometry and autonomous docking operations were tested under realistic conditions.
Here, for the first time the autonomous docking was successfully demonstrated from a distance of 10m. Since this worked under difficult conditions, the future test campaigns – in which the interplay of VIATOR and MANSIO will be further optimized – are optimistically expected, especially with regard to a successful demonstration mission aboard the Polarstern in autumn 2017.

On May 4, 2016, around 20 national and international experts from the research fields of space, deep sea, medicine, energy and miniaturization attended a workshop on „lab-on-chip“ technology in the Berlin office of the Helmholtz Association. The Helmholtz Alliance ROBEX offered a platform to exchange ideas in an interdisciplinary mixed group both on the technological challenges as well as on the identification of new applications.

On 19 and 20 April 2016 the 8th ROBEX community workshop will take place in the research facility „: envihab“ at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne Porz. The workshop will be attended by the international Advisory Board and more specifically invited guests are expected. The program includes in addition to the status reports of the several work packages and design teams a tour through the research facility: envihab, a visit to the Rosetta landing Control LCC and three guest lectures on „Mars Science Laboratory and the future of manned space flight“ (Prof. Wimmer-Schweingruber , University of Kiel) and „Enceladus Explorer“ (Prof. Dachswald, Fachhochschule Aachen) and the “Europa Explorer” (Marius Wirtz, DFKi Bremen).
